About the course

Taking the General English (Elementary to Advanced) Course will improve your English proficiency and you will receive a certificate detailing your level and duration of study.

The entry level of General English (Elementary to Advanced) Course and the approximate number of weeks required to achieve an English proficiency (IELTS Scores are an approximation) are shown below.

Note: Completing these does not mean that you have the IELTS Certificate. Instead it indicates the skill level. To receive an official IELTS score or equivalent you must take part in that particular test.

On completion of Intermediate and Upper Intermediate Level you can progress into various qualifications within Reach College.

English language proficiency requirement, ELICOS & exemptions [1]

In order to demonstrate English language proficiency, a prospective student must provide evidence to the Reach College. The evidence can be but is not limited to, a test score, licence and/or certificate from an approved English language test.

Examples of approved English language tests are IELTS, TOEFL, IELCA, Cambridge, OET, Linguaskill (general), Password skills and PTE.

  • Students who have a valid IELTS Scores of less than 4.5 (or equivalent), will have to take a Placement Test and be placed in a Beginner or Elementary level based on their test results.
  • Students who have a valid IELTS Scores of 4.5 or above, will be placed in the equivalent level based on their test results.
  • Students who have not taken an IELTS test (or equivalent), will have to take a Placement Test and be placed in the appropriate levels based on their test results.

Overseas students who do not meet the English language requirements for this course may be required to undertake an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) – up to 60 weeks with the College or any other RTO provider approved to provide ELICOS.

English exemption rule – students who are in one of the following conditions are exempted to present an English test score:

  • Students who are citizens of and hold a valid passport issued by: United Kingdom; United States of America; New Zealand; Canada; Ireland or
  • Study of more than five years in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia; United Kingdom; United States of America; New Zealand; Canada; Ireland; South Africa.
  • Students who have successfully completed a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education within the past 2 years in Australia, and the course was conducted in English.
  • Students who have substantially[3] or successfully completed the requirement for an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Certificate IV level or higher course within the past 2 years in Australia, and the course was conducted in English.
  • Students who are enrolling or enrolled in ELICOS, Schools, Secondary Exchange and Postgraduate Research.

[1] The college additional entry requirements for overseas students is required by the College in order to ensure that a student has sufficient English skills to complete their qualification.

[2] The test will not be applicable for all students. For example, students who are from a country that use English as their first language will not be required to take the placement test.

[3] Substantially complete means a student who complete at least 75% of the required UoC.

You will receive at least 20 hours of face-to-face teaching per week (Monday to Thursday) and 4 hours of self-study and consultation.

You will receive a 10-week course per level: 4 days per week, 5 hours per day (20hours per week).

Course Description:

 

Bespoke Grammar School of English’s primary goal for General English students is to prepare them to communicate successfully in English outside the classroom. General English courses are designed to develop autonomous learning through student-centred activities with a focus on task-based learning and communicative competence.

What you expect to achieve at the end of each Level
  

Elementary

 

At the completion of this level the student

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate
  • relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Upon successful completion of the Elementary course, students will be able to transfer to the Pre-Intermediate General English course.

Pre-Intermediate

 

At the completion of this level the student:

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where
  • the language is spoken.
  • Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal
  • interest.
  • Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

Upon successful completion of the Pre-Intermediate course, students will be able to transfer to the Intermediate General English course.

Intermediate

 

At the completion of this level the student

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options

Upon successful completion of the Intermediate course, students will be able to transfer to the Upper-Intermediate General English course, the IELTS Foundation course, or articulate into vocational courses.

Upper Intermediate

 

At the completion of this level the student

  • Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
  • Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing
  • controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices

Upon successful completion of the Upper-Intermediate course, students will be able to transfer to the advanced course or articulate into vocational or higher education courses.
